On Monday evening, Reading did the football club equivalent of unwrapping a present on Christmas Eve by announcing the signing of striker Jamie Reid from Stevenage the day before transfer deadline day.

The 32-year-old joins on a two-year deal and is expected to provide back-up to Jack Marriott, filling the role vacated by Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan but, as a proven goalscorer in League One, will surely have ambitions of making the starting centre-forward role his own.

Reid made 248 appearances in five years at Boro, and perhaps the most notable stat for Reading fans is he scored exactly 40 League One goals across the last three seasons, including 14 last season as Stevenage made the play-offs.
