While there were no current Reading players featuring in North America, so many matches had Royal connections that when Switzerland played Colombia in the Round of 16, ITV had to get Jobi McAnuff on punditry duties to redress the lack of Reading representation on our screens, or at least that was the reason I told myself.

One former Reading manager was leading his nation, two former Reading players stepped into their countries’ dugouts, while nine more were part of the squads at the inaugural 48-team tournament. Here is how they all got on.

Group Stage

Tyler Bindon – Hates the Swindon, loves the World Cup, so much so that it’s in his blood. The new Nottingham Forest centre-back is now part of the first mother-son duo to play at the finals, after mum Jenny played in goal at the 2007 Women’s World Cup. Tyler came off the bench against Iran and Egypt, coming close to scoring a consolation against the Pharaohs, then made a spectacular goal line clearance when playing the full 90 minutes against Belgium, as New Zealand exited with one point to their name.
