The Biscuit is hereby launching a petition to have the opening round of the EFL Cup on the Saturday before the new season, every season.

Acting as the perfect bridge between pre-season friendlies and the serious stuff, fans starved of competitive action turned out in force to watch players who would ordinarily be rested for a “Mickey Mouse” fixture. It’s a win-win.

Now, had Reading exited a cup competition before kicking a ball in the league, I might not be quite so firmly on board. However, there was a win for the Royals, too, as Leam Richardson’s men got the better of League One new boys Bromley on penalties after a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes in a match which, in many ways, highlighted many of the positives and negatives currently surrounding the side with Luton Town on the horizon.
