With the exception of a handful of senior players, the squad who took to the pitch in Reading's penultimate pre-season friendly of the summer against Crawley Town was made up of academy youngsters and those looking to force their way into Leam Richardson's plans this coming season.
One such player, centre-back Boyd Beacroft, scored the winner in a 1-0 victory that will live long in the memory – a first-time hit from deep inside his own half, which sailed over a back-tracking goalkeeper. And he meant it, too!
The goal came at a time when Reading's young and makeshift back line had been under the cosh against a League Two side who weren't afraid of being physical, and it encapsulated the pre-season as a whole – all members of the squad digging deep, showing what they are capable of and coming away with something positive.
