Anticipation for the 2026/27 season was growing even before the first friendly of the summer against Farnborough, by which time Reading had already signed four new first-team players – three on multi-year contracts and another on a season-long loan – in a flurry of activity more closely resembling the New York Stock Exchange than a typical early pre-season in Berkshire.
Naturally, said activity was always going to calm down sooner rather than later, and since Josh Stokes arrived on loan from Bristol City, we’ve had three friendlies and a trip to Spain, but no more strength added to the squad.
