Reading’s biggest win of the summer? Making us believe again

OPINION: A difficult summer off the pitch is no match for players and coaches earning the respect of fans on it, pre-season or not.

Isn’t it amazing what a few meaningless results can do?

As Reading dropped out of the 2025/26 League One play-off picture like a lead balloon, taking just two points from their last six league games, many disillusioned fans called on the club hierarchy to start afresh this summer with a new manager, having already scraped the barrel of patience they had in Leam Richardson – a barrel that had limited volume to begin with.

Those calls were met with one answer, or should that be One Royal? Described as “a new supporter offering”, which sadly did not mean sacrificing a youth from Club 1871 at the altar of Jimmy Kébé, and instead was the club’s convoluted new method of paying monthly for your season ticket, met with further disgruntlement from supporters who felt as if they were being treated like customers. The backlash to the scheme meant the club had to dedicate time to defending it, and small matters like the first team manager had to wait.
